Why the name: Antheia?
Antheia, whose name literally means 'the blooming', was a woman like no other. According to Greek mythology, she was the nymph of flowers and flowery wreaths worn at festivals and parties. Her name is derived from the Ancient Greek word anthos,
meaning flower, and She was one of the most beautiful handmaidens of
Aphrodite.
In ancient times, maidens, crowned with garlands of flowers and bearing baskets of roses, danced in procession to the music of flutes to the temple of Antheia, and laid their fragrant offerings upon Her altar on the Greek island of Crete. Today, we honour Antheia by creating the most beautiful wreaths we can to garland the heads of Cape Town's very own nymphs.
